Learning a new language can be really enjoyable when your approach to learning is geared towards having fun. EduEurope in cooperation with the University of Cádiz is trying out how to combine the joy of playing with a, sometimes troublesome, progress when learning a foreign language.

This new approach is called gamification, motivating students to learn by using video game design and game elements in a learning environment and to guide the participants’ behavior through participation, interaction, or even competition towards the achievement of a given learning (or even business) objective.

GoRace is the name of the game, which undergoes its first practice test with a group of Chinese students learning Spanish with EduEurope. This web application is an initiative of the SPI&FM Research Group at the University of Cádiz, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities within the project “BadgePeople: Leveling-up Innovation in Quality Improvement of People-Driven Processes with Simulation and Gamification”.

GoRace is a suite of web applications to gamify the activities of the classroom, adapted to the interests and needs of the students. It easily integrates with the teaching tools used at EduEurope and it provides the students with a unique experience that increases their motivation.

So far, EduEurope is very positive about the approach of gamification, evaluating that there is a notable increase in enjoyment and engagement through capturing the interest of the learners, and inspiring them to continue learning Spanish
